Bio:

My name is John Taflan.  I live in Chicago.  I love taking pictures.  I shoot primarily with a Nikon D7100, formally with a Nikon D70s, and occasionally with a Nikon N50.  Email me at johnnytaflan@gmail.com.  Let’s take pictures together!

Artist Statement:

My photography is primarily my conversation with the structures and technologies that human beings create for each other.

Starting with my use of the camera itself; I enjoy pushing equipment, lenses, and films away from their intended designs, discovering the infinite compensatory combinations that unfurl when instructions are ignored.

While I find myself drawn often to portraiture, my eye is continually interested in the existence of infrastructure and its interaction with the natural world. The contrasting and complimentary colors and temperatures that emerge in urban night photography have a particularly strong resonance with me.

Projects and thematic explorations often come to me on the long walks I take through the city of Chicago. Photography is deeply personal to me. A way I can frame and make sense of our boundless, unintentional beauty.
